How To Prepare For a Notary

What forms of I.D. do I need?

A form of government issued identification is required. Common forms of I.D. are social security card, drivers license or state issued I.D. card, or a valid passport. All forms of I.D. must not be expired and should include a photograph and/or signature of the individual signing.

Do I need a witness?

Two witnesses are recommended for wills (witnesses must not be named in will). State law requires two witnesses for medical or financial power of attorney or “POA” (witnesses must not be named in POA).

What if I can’t authenticate my identity?

If you or a witness are unable to authenticate your identity, or if the notarization is not completed for any reason, all fees will still apply. It is your responsibility to prepare for a notary to ensure services are rendered.

What else should I do to prepare?

It is critical that you read and understand any document you are signing. Do not sign any document that you are unsure of or do not feel comfortable signing.
